Main Lesson
‘Main lesson’ is a central feature of the Steiner approach. This lesson is taught at the beginning of each day and is usually about two hours long. In the main lesson subjects are taught in blocks of 3 – 6 weeks. However, this lesson is integrated and cross-curricular and can include activities to awaken and focus the children’s attention, oral and written practice of basic skills, mental arithmetic, singing, poetry, drawing, presentation of new material, recall and discussion of previous work, individual work, conversation, storytelling and practical work. Each day’s main lesson is presented as an integrated and artistic whole created by the class teacher in which meaningful connections can be made across subject areas and between main lesson themes.
The examples below are from main lesson books from a former group of 12-14 year olds.
